The Watauga Middle School football team snapped its three-game losing streak Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolverines (2-3) built an early 22-6 lead and hung on to beat Granite Falls 22-20 at Jack Groce Stadium.
Joey Watson paced Watuaga as he scored three times on runs of 50-,22-,and 62-yards. He also scored on a two-point conversion run, and he tossed a two-point conversion pass to Jamie Gough.
Defensively, Braxton Moffett made four tackles-for-loss and recovered a fumble; Dale Holman had three tfl and Alex McConnell had two tfl.
"We hardly had the ball, especially in the third quarter," said Watauga coach Dale Allred. "They nickeled-and-dimed us all night long. Fortunately, we built the early lead and were able to hang on."
In the fifth quarter, Aaron Lubekmann and Kyran Densham each recovered a fumble; Holman scored two touchdowns on runs of 60-, and two-yards. The Wolverines play at William-Lenior next Wednesday.
