The Watauga High girl's tennis team basically owns the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. The Pioneers (7-3 overall; 4-0 NW3A/4A Conference) have won the last four league titles, and going back to last fall, WHS has won 16 straight in conference play.
The latest victim was St. Stephens. The Pioneers disposed of the Indians 8-1 Monday night in Hickory. Meredith Smith set the tone by winning her match at No.1 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 over Ellie Hunt of the Indians. Her sister, freshman Meghan Smith, knocked off Jenny Kerky, 6-0, 6-1. And Nicole Fox knocked off Haley Ormand, 6-2, 6-0, at No.3 singles, and the Pioneers were well on their way.
The Pioneers only lost ten games in the their first 12 sets. Savannah Copeland played No. 6 singles Monday, and she closed out singles play by beating Avery Brown of the Indians, 6-0, 6-2.
