The Watauga High boy's soccer team tasted defeat for the first time this season. The Pioneers (12-1
overall; 4-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) were bested 1-0 by St. Stephens in a NW3A/4A Conference game they basically controlled throughout.
The Indians pushed one by goalkeeper Jake Chasteen at the 60-minute mark of the second half for the difference maker. And while the Pioneers were losing, Fred T. Foard, which began the night in a first-place tie with WHS, lost to Freedom, 6-2.
McCartney Barrier’s goal broke a 2-all tie, then Yaret Regino’s third goal gave the Patriots (9-1-0, 4-1-0) a 4-2 lead. Freedom put the contest out of reach on goals by Sebastian Ixchajchal and Luis Caballero. The Patriots scored four times in an eight minutes stretch to break that contest open.
That effort by the Patriots has pushed WHS, FTF and FHS into a three-way tie for first place in the NW3A/4A Conference (all those teams have identical 4-1 league records. St. Stephens, with Monday night's win, is sitting in fourth place, just one-half game off the lead at 3-1-1.
The Pioneers return home to play FTF Wednesday night. The Pioneers won the junior varsity match, 4-3. Kobe Araica led the way with two goals and an assist.
