The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Team (5-1, 1-0) upset Wingate (3-2, 1-1), 1-0, Sunday evening on the
road in its South Atlantic Conference opener at the Wingate Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II.
Senior forward Gabriel Jones (Chiswick, ENGLAND) scored the lone goal of the match at the 65:22 mark of the second half. Jones finished off a shot at the inside right post for his first goal of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Stefan Dill (Southampton, BERMUDA) earned the shutout victory, his second straight and third of the season. Dill made three saves on the night. Wingate's Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Canada) suffered the loss in goal despite allowing just one score to go along with a save. The Bulldogs have lost two straight matches.
The Bulldogs held an 11-4 advantage in shots taken but the Bears held on for their fourth straight victory. L-R also won against Wingate on the road for the first time since the 2006 season.
In the next round of South Atlantic Conference matches for both schools on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Coker while Wingate hosts Catawba.
L-R Women Battle Wingate To Scoreless Tie
Lenoir-Rhyne (2-2-1, 0-0-1) and Wingate (4-0-3, 1-0-1) played to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes in South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Wingate Soccer Complex.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which is now 20-0-1 in its last 21 league matches, held a 10-8 advantage in shots taken in the tie.
Both goalkeepers, L-R junior Tessa Lukens (Buford, Ga.) and Wingate's Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.), earned the shutout after 110 minutes of action.
Lukens made a pair of saves on the afternoon while Hardie stopped three Lenoir-Rhyne shots in the tie. The shutout was also Lukens' first of her collegiate career. The Bears remain without a win in their last three contests while the Bulldogs remained without a loss after the first seven matches of the 2013 season.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to host Coker in a South Atlantic Conference match on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. Wingate, meanwhile, remains at home to face Catawba in a league contest on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m., as well.
