The Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team (2-1, 1-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 34-13 victory over Wingate (1-1, 0-1) Saturday evening at Moretz Stadium. L-R ran for 422 yards including a game-high 179 from junior quarterback Miles Freeman (Sacramento, Calif.) while the Bears' defense finished with seven quarterback sacks in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored on its first two possessions, including a 49-yard touchdown run by junior fullback Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.) on the initial drive, and raced to a 27-6 halftime lead en route to the win.
Wingate cut the advantage to 27-13 on a one-yard touchdown run by running back Mycah Gaylord (High Point, N.C.) late in the third quarter but L-R put the game away when senior halfback Graham Duncan (Gainesville, Ga.) found the end zone from 11 yards out early in the fourth on the ensuing drive.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, Freeman scored on a 56-yard touchdown run, junior halfback Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) scored twice and Whitaker and Duncan finished with 98 and 89 yards, respectively, on the ground.
On defense for the Bears, junior linebacker Tanner Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and junior defensive back O'neil Blake (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished with 13 tackles each and junior defensive lineman Blake Baker (Bethlehem, N.C.) and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Chris Green (Albany, Ga.) both had two sacks.
Wingate's Robbie Nallenweg (Asheville, N.C.) passed for 324 yards and a score but was picked off twice while T.J. Weinberg (Apex, N.C.) and Auntrell Mack (Irmo, S.C.) had 12 takedowns each in the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum on Saturday in a league contest beginning at 2:30 p.m. Wingate, meanwhile, faces UNC Pembroke on the road Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
