Head coach Woody McKay has worked miracles during his tenure as a soccer coach. He had a tremendous run during his stay at Burnsville-Mountain Heritage High, turning that program into a Class 2A powerhouse. Well McKay hasn't missed a beat since taking over at Watauga.
The Pioneers (11-0 overall; 4-0 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) made their way to the Class 4A Western Regionals last fall, their first trip to that venue since 1999.
And now, McKay has taken the Pioneers a step further. WHS is currently ranked fourth in the state in the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association Class 4A Top 15 Poll.
It's WHS' highest ranking in school history. Prior, WHS best showing in the state rankings was a seventh-place showing in 1999.
The Pioneers have a huge week coming up with a road game at St. Stephens Monday night before they return home to play Fred T. Foard next
That match up Wednesday night will be a battle for first place. Both the Pioneers and the Tigers lead the NW3A/4A with identical 4-0 records. Freedom, which is ranked eighth in the state in Class 3A, is in third a game back at 3-1. A.C. Reynolds (10-3), which lost to WHS on August 30, is ranked 7th in the Class 3A poll.
