The Watauga High girl's tennis team remain undefeated in Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play by knocking off South Caldwell 7-2 Wednesday night in Sawmills, N.C.
Dating back to last year, the Pioneers have won 15 consecutive conference matches. The Pioneers (6-3 overall; 3-0 NW3A/4A) didn't have any problems disposing of the Spartans. Wins by Meredith Smith, Meghan Smith, Nicole Fox, Kelsi Kanoy, Liz Clark, and Annika Davidson gave WHS a commanding 6-0 lead through singles play. WHS only lost six games in the 12 sets they played.
Fox and Kanoy finished things off by knocking off Shelby Brookshire and Clair Stoudemire of the Spartans 8-6 at No.1 doubles.
"We don't get the attention some of the other sports get at Watuaga, but we're proud of what we've accomplished," said senior Meredith Smith. "I've been play number one singles for three years now, and I've worked hard to maintain it. And we won the conference last year with an undefeated record (12-0 in league play), and we just want to keep it going."
Kylie Winkleman won her singles match in exhibition play. She defeated Caroline Huffman of the Spartans, 8-1. The Pioneers travel to St. Stephens next Monday, September 23.
