Watauga High senior Savannah Wood, who has made a verbal commitment to attend Appalachian State University next fall, continued her march to an individual championship in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference on Monday at the Orchard Hills Golf Course in Granite Falls, N.C.
Wood, who didn't have her greatest outing of the year, still found a way to win medalist honors. She finished with a five-over-par 41 and nosed out Patricia Thompson of South Caldwell, who was playing on her home course, by one shot to win the match. Bree Keller of Hickory finished third with an eight-over-par 44.
"South Caldwell ended up winning the team competition," said WHS coach Jamie Wilson. "But Savanna came away as the medalist. Orchard is definitely a tricky course."
Team wise, South Caldwell paced the field with a team score of 134. The Spartans bested the field by 11 shots. WHS finished second with a 145; Hickory finished third with a 147.
Mary Seramer of the Pioneers finished in the top ten with a 14-over-par 50. Victoria Stapelton of the Pioneers finished with a 54; Victoria Shukis had a 59; Katie Alexander had a 60.
The Pioneers travel to the Catawba Country Club in Newton, N.C., next Tuesday for a NW3A/4A match. Hickory will be the host school.
