The Watuaga High junior varsity football team knocked off Avery 35-0 Thursday night in a non-conference
game at Jack Groce Stadium. The game was called after the third quarter because of lightning.
It's the second time this year that the JV team has been hampered by inclement weather. The Pioneers (2-1) had their season-opener cut short because of lightning. The contest was stopped at halftime.
But the weather was really the only thing that could stop the Pioneers on this night. WHS, led by freshman running back Evan Suggs and quarterback Caleb Bryson, marched their way up-and-down the field against the Vikings.
Suggs scored twice, on a five-yard run and an eight-yard run; Bryson scored on a 10-yard run, and he hooked up with Case Taylor on a 78-yard scoring toss. Bryson also scored on a two-point conversion try. Corey West scored the other WHS TD on a 20-yard run; Chase Palm had three extra points.
The Pioneers have a bye next week. They travel to St. Stephens for their Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener on Thursday, September 26.
