Cougars Down Pioneers PDF Print

The Watauga High girl's tennis team was sent reeling Thursday night. The Pioneers dropped a 7-2 decision in a non-conference match at Asheville. The Pioneers (4-3) picked up wins at No.6 singles and No.3 doubles.
Annika Davidson of the Pioneers defeated Ellie Hartye of Asheville in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Taylor Paige and Ali Maupin won their match at No.6 singles, 8-6. Meghan Smith nearly pulled off a win at No.2 singles, but she lost to Sens Mucklon in three sets, 5-7, 8-6, (5-10 in a tiebreaker).
Liz Clark nearly pulled off a victory at No.5 singles, but lost to Rose Mosher of the Cougars, 7-5, 2-6, (8-10 in the tiebreaker).
The Pioneers also have a couple of close calls in doubles play. Meredith Smith and Nicole Fox were bested by Adrianne Hayes and Kristi Kim 8-6 at No.1 doubles; Mucklon and Adelyn Luke nudged Meghan Smith and Kelsi Kanoy 8-6 at No.2 doubles.
Addie Hall and Deanna Indicott of the Pioneers won their exhibition doubles match, 8-5, and Savannah Copeland won her exhibition singles match, 7-7 (7-4 in the tiebreaker).
The Pioneers (1-0 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) take on Hickory at home on Monday at 4 p.m.
