Martin, Pioneers Upend Panthers PDF Print

Hunter Martin is probably one of the least known commodities of the Watauga High boy's soccer team. But to his credit, Martin has waited patiently for the opporunity to show off his talents. And that moment of truth arrived on Wednesday night.
Martin snapped a 1-1 tie with the game's eventual winning goal at the 56-minute mark of the second half. Cam Linnville picked up the assist with a beautiful crossing pass on the play. And that tally handed WHS a 2-1 win against Patton in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game in Morganton, N.C.
"It was a great goal," WHS coach Woody McKay said. "Cam did a great job dribbling the ball into the attack zone and he found Hunter. And Hunter finished with a beautiful shot. We didn't score a lot tonight, and believe me, we had our chances. But we found a way to get it done."
The Pioneers (9-0 overall; 2-0 NW3A/4A Conference) jumped on top at the 18-minute mark of the first half on a goal by Tucker Chasteen. He scored on a rebound off a shot by Logan Raichle that handcuffed the Patton goalkeeper. But the Panthers tied the game with a minute left to play before halftime.
"And sometimes adversity like that is a good thing," McKay said. "I was pleased with our defense as a whole. But they created a scoring chance late in the first half and tied the game. But I was pleased with our effort. I thought we did a very good job of controlling the play for the most part."
The Pioneers return home to play Hickory Monday night. The Red Tornadoes (0-1-1 NW3A/4A) dropped a 2-1 decision at home against Fred T. Foard Wednesday night.
"And they played St. Stephens to a 2-2 tie Monday," McKay said. "This is a very strong conference, and Hickory is one of those teams that's always in the mix. It's going to be a great test for our guys. We're really looking forward to the challenge."
The Pioneers defeated Hickory last season and snapped the Red Tornadoes 32-game winning streak in league play.
The WHS JV team defeated Patton 1-0 Wednesday night. Kobe Araica scored the game's goal. Freddy Aguilera picked up the assist.
