Appalachian State University field hockey picked up its first win of the season on Sunday in a neutral site

match in Davidson, N.C.
The Mountaineers were able to pull out a win in the last three minutes of the match with a goal from sophomore forward Caroline Phillips (Delmar, Del./Delmar) at the 67:07 mark off of a penalty corner.
The match began with an early lead from Vermont, who scored three minutes in off the stick of Ashley McDonald.
The Apps quickly responded at the 8:49 minute mark with a goal from sophomore Lindsay Amador (McLean, Va./Langley) who picked up a loose ball in front of the net, beating the goalkeeper to the right.
Appalachian continued to find the net, ending the half with a goal from junior forward Jordyn Warren (Allentown, Pa./Freedom), making the score 2-1.
The second half started well for the Mountaineers as Phillips scored at the 41:50 mark off an assist from Amador.
The Catamounts fought back with two goals in the 58th and 62nd minute.  The first was scored by McDonald, who received a pass from the right side of the field from Colleen Slaughter.  The second goal, from Maddy Ostrander, tied up the match with seven minutes remaining.
App State prevented overtime with a penalty corner from sophomore Hanna French (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood). French crossed the ball to senior forward Emily Knapp (Great Falls, Va/Langley), who assisted Phillips’ winning goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi (Vienna, Va./James Madison) got her first start of the season, recording two saves and the win.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 1-2 overall on the season.  They will be back in action Sept. 14 when they travel to Farmville, Va. for their first NorPac match against Longwood at 12 p.m.
