Shippensburg (Pa.) (3-0) handed Lenoir-Rhyne (1-1) its first loss of the season, 3-2, Saturday afternoon on the final day at the Catawba Volleyball Invitational at Goodman Gymnasium. The Red Raiders beat the Bears by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 14-25, 25-27 and 15-10.
Jill Edwards (Raleigh, N.C.) led Shippensburg with 18 kills and 17 digs while Casey Hawbaker (Huntingdon, Pa.) added 29 digs as Shippensburg remained undefeated on the year. Lenoir-Rhyne, which tried to rally from a two-set deficit but came up short in the fifth set, was led by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Wells (Lovingston, Va.).
Wells tallied a team-high 14 kills and was one of four Bears with 10 or more kills in the contest despite the loss. Sophomore setter Briana Gottberg (Mooresville, N.C.) tallied a double-double - 55 assists and 19 digs - while junior defensive specialist Nkaujshua Lo (Newton, N.C.) added 25 digs in the losing effort for Lenoir-Rhyne.
