The South Caldwell High football team received the worst new possible on Wednesday. Its star running

back, Zac Pollard, has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus in his left knee. Pollard, an All-State player last fall, was injured during South Caldwell's season opener last Friday night against West Caldwell.
Pollard had an MRI on Tuesday, when the injury was discovered. It's a huge blow for the Spartans, who are two-time defending champions in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. South Caldwell was 12-1 last season and lost to Sun Valley in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Pollard played a huge role in that run by the Spartans. He ran for 3,073 yards and 36 touchdowns.
Pollard's injury is the second major one in as many weeks for key position players among NW3A/4A schools.
Fred T. Foard junior quarterback Matt Williams broke the tibia/shin bone in two places in his left leg during the Tigers' season-opening loss against Maiden.
