Boone Voting: Back to 3 Precincts PDF Print

Even with goals falling back in line—and one unanimous vote—the Watauga Board of Elections had trouble agreeing on most points at yesterday afternoon’s meeting—a day after being scolded by the State Board of Elections and admonished to ‘get along.’ The local board did vote to rescind their controversial action from August 12th which combined the three Boone precincts to one, a move that would have created one of the largest number registered voters voting at one polling place in the state.  Then the debate centered on which ASU facility best fit the voting—the Plemmons Student Union or Legends, Kathleen Campbell saying, “It’s going to be hard for me to vote for this.  And think you could get your same ends by just saying ‘the Watauga County Board of Elections wishes to study this matter further and allow for all citizens to have accurate and complete information’ and leave off the ‘prior to the recombination of this precinct’ because that sounds like you’ve already got your mind made up—that you’re going to do it.” After a long discussion, it was another agree to disagree, a split 2 to 1 vote to move the polling location to Legends.
