Well it didn't take long for Savannah Wood to make her mark in the 2013 season. The Watauga High
senior, who has made a verbal commitment to attend Appalachian State University next fall, fired a 34 in the opening match of the season Monday at the Boone Golf Club.
Wood paced WHS to a dual victory as the WHS girl's golf team knocked off Ashe County, 134-161. Mary Seramur and Victoria Stapleton supported Wood's effort by finishing in the top three.
Seramur tied Sarah Hardin of Ashe County for second place as each player fired a 48. Stapleton finished third with a 52. Wood, who was one under par on the day, bested the field by 15 strokes.
"The girls played really well today in our match against Ashe," said WHS coach Jamie Wilson. " Savannah followed up an excellent weekend of golf by shooting a one under par on the front nine." Wood, a three-time state qualifier who finished 12th last season, won the NJGT National Championship at The Pearl in Calabash, N.C. this past weekend. She had a two day total of 159. Her next Junior Golf event is The Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational at Moss Creek in Hilton Head, SC Sept. 14-15.
"It's my senior year and I want to finish strong," Wood said. "I really didn't like the way I putted at the state tournament last year. I want to make up for that this season. I've really worked hard on my game this summer."
Olivia Barr of the Huskies finished fourth and fired a 54; Heather Oswalt and Katie Alexander of the Pioneers tied for fifth. They both had a 58. The Pioneers will host a meet next Tuesday at the Boone Golf Club at 3:30 p.m.
