The Hickory Crawdads made history Friday night, with Joey Gallo slamming 3 home runs as part of a five homer night for the 'Dads in their 7-3 win over the Delmarva
Shorebirds. The five Hickory homers pushed the 'Dads season total to 174, passing the 1998 Macon Braves for the most home runs in South Atlantic League history.
In front of 3,333 fans at Crawdads Stadium, the Hammerin' Hickory Crawdads put on an offensive show while slamming five homers in a game for the second time this season. Gallo's second 3-homer game of the year led the way, with second baseman Alejandro Selen and right fielder Nomar Mazara joining in on the fun with a dinger apiece.
The air raid began in the bottom of the first, with Selen and Gallo each crushing 2-run homers to give Hickory an early 4-0 lead. The advantage and homer total both increased in the third, when Mazara connected on a solo shot off the video board in right to make the score 5-0.
Gallo came back up to bat in the bottom of the 5th and once again came through with a long ball, this time sending a soaring moon shot over the wall in right for a solo blast to make the score 6-0.
Following a 3-run top of the third by Delmarva to cut the score to 6-3, Gallo stepped in for his fourth at-bat in the bottom of the inning. The Hickory slugger then crushed his third home run of the game over the center field wall to increase the 'Dads lead to the 7-3 margin they would go on to win by.
Gallo finished the night 3-4 with three home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. The 3-homer game increased Gallo's already record total for the 'Dads to 36 for the season, and also pushed him into first place in all of Minor League Baseball with 38 homers overall between Hickory and Arizona.
Selen ended the game 1-2 with a 2-run homer and a walk, while Mazara went 2-4 with his long ball. Lewis Brinson also had a good night, going 2-4 with a walk.
Hickory starting pitcher Paul Schwendel (1-2) earned the win with his best performance in a Crawdads uniform this year. The 6'5" right-hander struck out a season-high 8 batters, while holding Delmarva to three runs on four hits over 6.1 innings pitched. Shorebirds starter Juan Guzman (6-6) took the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits, 4 homers, over 6 innings.
The win snaps a 7-game skid for the Crawdads (35-32) and raises their season record against the Shorebirds (24-43) to 5-4. The two clubs will meet up again Saturday night in game two of their 4-game series at 7:00 pm.

'Dads Smash SAL HR Record
The Hickory Crawdads broke the South Atlantic League home run record in dramatic fashion Friday night, with the 'Dads crushing five long balls in their 7-3 win over Delmarva to push them past the 1998 Macon Braves with 174 homers on the season.
All-Star third baseman Joey Gallo delivered the historic blow in the 7th, when he smashed his third home run of the night over the center field wall. The 3-homer game is the second of the season for Gallo, who already owns the Crawdads single-season record with 36 long balls this year.
Gallo is also the front-runner for the Joe Bauman award, which is given to the player who leads MiLB in home runs. Gallo currently has 38 dingers on the year, with his 36 Hickory homers combined with two from the Arizona League. The Hammerin' Hickory Crawdads' 174 homers currently ranks third in all of professional baseball, trailing only the Stockton Ports (180) of the California League and the Baltimore Orioles (178) in the Majors.
The 'Dads still have three more games against the Shorebirds to increase their record homer total, with a 7:00 pm game on Saturday, 5:00 pm on Sunday, and a 1:00 pm afternoon game on Labor Day Monday.
