Pioneers Nip Huskies In OT PDF Print

The Watauga High football team kinocked off Ashe County 13-7 in overtime Friday night in a non-

conference game at Huskies Stadium in West Jefferson, N.C. The Huskies (1-1) won the battle, but lost the ball. Ashe County racked up 313 yard on offense, 19 first downs and held the ball for 30 minutes on Friday night.

But WHS (2-0) prevailed as Zach Williams, who sat out last Friday's season opener with a high ankle sprain snapped a 7-7 tiie on a one-yard run on fourth and goal in the fiirst overtime period.

"I was thinking about kicking a field goal, but we were so close, just inches from the goal line," said WHS coach Ryan Habich. "If we can't move the ball just inches from the goal line, then we shouldn't be playing high school football."

The Pioneers, who are off to their best start since 2006, also won their first overtime game since 2008 (against McDowell that season). And WHS also beat Ashe County for the 12th consecutive time in this series.
