The Hickory Crawdads slammed two more home runs Thursday night, including the record setting 33rd of the year by Joey Gallo, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers came back with two long balls of their own to knock off the 'Dads 4-3 at NewBridge Bank Park.
The Crawdads went to the air first, with Jorge Alfaro crushing a 2-run long ball to center in the third inning to give the 'Dads a 2-0 lead. The Grasshoppers answered back with a homer of their own in the bottom of the 5th, with second baseman Avery Romero lining a 3-run blast to left to put the 'Hoppers ahead 3-2.
Gallo responded the next half inning, as the Hickory slugger slammed a solo shot to right to tie the game at 3-3. The homer was the 33rd of the year for Gallo, setting a new Crawdads single-season record.
Greensboro replied with their second homer of the night in the bottom of frame, with right fielder Austin Dean lining a solo blast to left to give the Grasshoppers a 4-3 lead they would never relinquish.
The 'Dads were unable to score again due to the solid pitching of Dejai Oliver and the Greensboro bullpen. Oliver (6-4) earned the win for the 'Hoppers after striking out a season-high 12 batters while allowing three runs on seven hits over 7 innings pitched. Hickory reliever Santo Perez (0-3) took the loss for allowing Dean's go-ahead blast in the 6th, the only run he surrendered over three innings on the mound. Grasshoppers reliever Ronald Barnes (6) earned the save for the second straight night with a perfect 9th inning.
Gallo finished the game 1-4 with his record setting blast, while Alfaro also went 1-4 with a homer. Luis Marte also had a good game going 2-4 with two doubles, while Kevin Torres finished 2-4 with one double.
With the loss the Crawdads (34-32) are swept in their 3-game series against the Grasshoppers (31-34), which also extends their current losing streak to a season-high seven games. The 'Dads will look to turn things around at home, as they return to Hickory for a 4-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds. First pitch Friday night is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
