The Watauga High junior varsity football team toughed out a 14-6 win over Ashe County in its home
opener Thursday night at Jack Groce Stadium.
The Pioneers (1-1), who handed Ashe County a 6-0 lead thanks to a turnover, came charging back to take a 7-6 halftime lead. And it only took WHS 16 seconds to find the end zone.
The Pioneers marched 72 yards and scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Caleb Bryson to Corey West with two seconds left in the second quarter. Chase Palm's extra point gave WHS a one-point lead at the break.
A 16-yard run by Evan Suggs, a 35-yard pass play and a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty against the Huskies aided WHS' scoring drive. The Pioneers increased their lead by scoring on their opening drive of the second half.
Evan Suggs, who had four carries on the drive, capped it off with a 41-yard run and a 14-6 lead. The Pioneers have a bye next week. They host Avery on Friday, September 12.
