Fred T. Foard High quarterback Matt Williams suffered a broken leg in last Friday's season opener against
Maiden last Friday night in Newton. Williams, a junior playing at his third school in three years, broke his left tibia (shin bone) in two places. The injury will sideline him for the rest of the season, according to FTF head coach Tom Harper.
Running back and backup quarterback Jacob Schmidt, who was the starting quarterback last season, is listed as week-to-week because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He played Friday night while wearing a brace.
The Tigers (0-1), who play at Bandys (1-0) on Friday will start quarterback Alexander Toy, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound sophomore.
Toy ran for five yards and his only pass was intercepted in a 48-20 loss to Maiden on Friday. He was playing on the varsity via the eight-quarter rule and will now move to the varsity full-time, Harper said. Chaynse Faust (6-1, 150, sophomore) will remain the Tigers’ junior varsity quarterback.
Williams ran 11 times for 88 yards and completed seven passes for 68 yards in last Friday's season opener before he left the game with a leg injury.
Schmidt, a junior, who suffered his knee injury playing summer basketball, caught a pass and went down without contact from another player, said Foard boys’ basketball head coach and athletic director Rob Bliss. Against Maiden, Schmidt had four carries for one yard and had one catch for nine yards. He was the leading returning rusher for Foard with 87 carries for 256 yards and five scores last season, and he also threw for 380 yards.
Harper is in his fourth job as a head coach. He was previously at East Burke, Alexander Central and Hickory.
