The Watauga High volleyball team tasted defeat for the first time this season. The Pioneers (3-1), who won a marathon match at home against North Surry last
week, suffered a four-set loss to the Greyhounds in a non-conference match Tuesday night in Mount Airy, N.C.
The Greyhounds knocked off WHS 27-25, 34-32, 20-25, 25-12. Meredith Farthing paced the Pioneers with 14 kills and 16 digs; Sarah Combs had 31 assists, 12 digs and two aces. Sarah Petersen had ten kills in the loss; Kiersten McClannon had 20 digs, and Sydney Farthing had 21 digs and three aces.
The Pioneers conclude a very busy week of three games in three night as they return home to play St. Stephen at Lentz-Eggers Gym Wednesday night in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener for both teams.
North Surry won the JV match, 2-1. The Greyhounds defeated WHS 25-27, 25-20, 25-17. Savannah Rusher had eight assists in the loss; Reina Marze chipped in with seven assists. Olivia Williamson hade seven kills, three blocks and two aces; Taylor McCune had six kills and 17 digs.
