The Watuaga High girl's tennis team victimized Ashe County for the second time in four days. The Pioneers (2-0), who belted Ashe County 9-0 last Thursday in Boone,

knocked off the Huskies 7-2 Monday afternoon in West Jefferson, N.C.
The Pioneers dominated the match by winning five of six singles matches. Meghan Smith, Kelsi Kanoy, Annika Davidson and Savannah Copeland all posted straight-set victories to give WHS a commanding 4-0 lead. Eleanor Sprague clinched the match with a win at No.6 singles.
She defeated Erin Griffin of the Huskies 6-0, 6-2. Copeland and Smith teamed up for an 8-4 win at No.1 doubles over Hallie Brown and Maggie Witherspoon of the Huskies; sprague and Addie Hall closed things out with a win at No.3 doubles by knocking off Ella copeland and Erin Griffin of Ashe County, 8-2.
The Pioneers travel to Pfafftown-Reagan for a match on Thursday.

WHS VOLLEYBALL WINS THIRD STRAIGHT


The Watauga High volleyball team won its third consecutive match to start the season by knocking off Ashe County 3-0 in a non-conference match Monday night at Huskies Gym in West Jefferson, N.C.
The Pioneers (3-0), who play three matches in three weeks before they break for the Labor Day holiday weekend, defeated Ashe County 25-15, 25-16, 25-10. Meredith Farthing, Rebecca Hayes, Sierra Hall and Sarah Petersen dominated the front line by racking up 50 kills in 57 attempts.
Farthing led the way with 17 kills in 20 attempts; Hayes had 11 kills in 13 attempts; Hill had 13 kills in 15 attempts and Petersen was perfect on the night with nine kills in nine attempts. Hayes had four aces; Petersen had three aces.
Whitney Dunnigan and Sarah Combs paced the attack as they combined for 36 assists. Dunnigan had 17 assists; Combs had 19 assists and four aces.
WHS won the JV match, 2-0. The Pioneers won 25-13, 25-8. Callie Idol had six kills and four aces; Savannah Rusher had six kills and six assists; Reina Marze had seven assists and Cierra Terrant had four aces.
The Pioneers travel to North Surry on Tuesday; they return home to play St. Stephens in their Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener Wednesday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
