Hellenbrand Leads WHS At XC Carnival PDF Print

Sophomore Matthew Hellenbrand was Watauga High's best finisher on Saturday at the Western North

Carolina Cross Country Carnival at Jackson Park in Hendersonville, N.C.  T.C. Roiberson was the host school.

 

Hellenbrand turned in a second-place finish in the boys 3-K race. He completed the race in 11:07.79; Alex Heintze of Providence Day School won the race in 10:53.94. Sam Williams of the Pioneers finished tenth in 11:51.12. Jake Ellington finished 11th in 11:54.15. WHS had six runners in the top 20.

Providence Day won the meet with 34 points. The Pioneers were a close second with 44 points in second place.

Michael Holland paced WHS in the boy's championship race. He was 16th in 16:59.45. Will Vandenberg was 22nd in 17:06.08. Team wise, the Pioneers finished seventh with 249 points; Raleigh-Cardinal Gibbons bested the field with 80 points.

Grant Pilkington was 16th in the boy's invitational (18:48.69); the Pioneers finished ninth as a team with 285 points; WHS was 16th as a team in the boy's individual race with a team score of 426.

A pair of freshmen paced WHS in the girl's 3-K race. Finley Collins finished 11th in 13:59.22. She missed cracking the top ten by 30 seconds; Nicole Fanatico was 14th in 14:16.07. WHS had three runners in the top 20.

WHS finished second as a team with 59 points; TCR won the meet with 16 points, one shy of a perfect score. Kathleen Mansure was WHS' highest finisher in the championship race. She finished 14th in 20:10.69. WHS finished 12th with 309 points; Raleigh-Cardinal Gibbons won the meet with 55 points. WHS was 21st in the girl's invitational race with 558 points.

WHS will compete in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference relay meet on Wednesday.
