The journey of a 1,000 miles begins with the first step. And in Ryan Habich's case, that first step turned
into a giant leap. Habich, Watauga High's ninth football coach since 1995, made a huge splash Friday night as the Pioneers blasted Alexander Central 34-12 in their season opener at Jack Grioce Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Aaron Dobbins led the assault. He was 5-6 for 111 yards and two touchdown passes before he left the game early in the second quarter with a concussion. Wide receiver Cameron Baker caught four passes for 115 yards and three touchdowns; Michael Ebaugh caught four passes for 109 yards and two scores.
Austin Northern, who replaced Dobbins at quarterback, was 5-6 for 113 yards and two TDs. The Pioneers racked up 319 yards, 263 through the air. There will be more information on this story later this morning.
