Ali Ford has earned her place among the elite athletes in the state of North Carolina. Ford, who graduated from Freedom in 2009, and from Elon University last spring, was recognized as one of the top 100 female athletes in the history of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
The NCHSAA released the list — which was compiled by a special panel of administrators, coaches and media members — on Tuesday in honor of the organization’s 100 year.
Ford was named the NCHSAA 2009 female athlete of the year. She won 18 varsity letters and 12 all-conference recognitions (including four apiece in basketball and softball). The 5-foot-3 point guard finished her Freedom career with 2,502 points (seventh best all-time in the NCHSAA in the five-player era) and made 286 3-point field goals (fifth best all-time).
After high school, Ford accepted a scholarship to attend Elon University. She led the Phoenix to their first NCAA Division I postseason tournament and was named All-Southern Conference four times including freshman of the year in 2010. She was also Elon's second leading scorer and the SoCon leader in three-point field goals for a career.
