In anticipation of Saturday’s pivotal Fan Fest intrasquad scrimmage, Appalachian State University football held a relatively light practice on Friday afternoon at sunny Kidd
Appalachian State practiced for two hours in helmets and shoulder pads on Friday afternoon. The workout included limited contact and no tackling and was dedicated for the most part to preparing for Saturday’s scrimmage, which is expected to be the final intrasquad duel before the Mountaineers open the season at Montana on Aug. 31.
Appalachian’s first and second teams will likely see the majority of the action on Saturday evening as the Mountaineer coaching staff looks to begin finalizing the depth chart and travel roster for the opener at Montana. The scrimmage begins at 7 p.m., which could prove to be beneficial for the Mountaineers early in the season, as their first three games (at Montana, the Sept. 7 home opener versus N.C. A&T and Sept. 21 at Elon) will all be played under the lights.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for Saturday’s annual Fan Fest, which is expected to draw between 5,000-10,000 visitors to The Rock. Appalachian State coaches and student-athletes will be on the field from 5-6:30 p.m., signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans while families can toss the football on the Kidd Brewer Stadium turf and kids can take advantage of inflatable rides set up around the field.
The much-anticipated intrasquad scrimmage kicks off at 7 p.m., followed immediately by what promises to be a dazzling fireworks display to close the evening. Admission to Fan Fest is FREE. For details on parking and tailgating, visit appstatesports.com.
