Appalachian State women’s soccer opened up its preseason schedule Thursday in Blacksburg, Va. against ACC member Virginia Tech, falling by a 4-1 final to the Hokies.
The two teams played three, thirty-minute periods, which is exactly how the Mountaineers played their Black and Gold scrimmage last Sunday.
Appalachian got off to a great start off a beautiful goal from Samantha Childress in the first thirty minute period. Childress struck a ball from about 35-yards out and caught the Hokies off guard to give App State an early 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the one goal was all the squad could muster. Virginia Tech rallied with four unanswered goals, all coming in the second thirty. Ellie Zoepfl, Candace Cephers and Ashley Manning were the goal scorers with Zoepfl scoring two on the night. It was Cephers one-timer goal that put the Hokies in the lead for good as there was no scoring in the third period.
Megan Roberson got the start in goal for App State and made three saves on seven shots on goal. The Mountaineers were able to get four shots off with two on goal while the Hokies fired 17 shots, seven of which were on target. Childress and Julia Holz let the Mountaineers with two shots each, while both players had one shot on goal.
Appalachian will return to action on the road for its second and final exhibition game at Longwood in Farmville, Va. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
