ASU Reveals 2013-14 Men’s Hoops Schedule PDF Print

Appalachian State University men’s basketball head coach Jason Capel announced his squad’s schedule for the upcoming 2013-14 season on Monday. The schedule is highlighted by 15 home games and non-conference trips to Cincinnati, Georgia and NC State.
The Mountaineers face five teams in 2013-14 that advanced to the postseason last season, including three NCAA Tournament participants (Cincinnati, NC State and Davidson). Additionally, five Appalachian State opponents (Cincy, Davidson, Elon, NC State and North Carolina Central) won 20 or more games a season ago.
Appalachian State opens the campaign at NC State on Nov. 8. The opener in Raleigh is Appalachian’s 13th all-time meeting versus NC State and the first between the in-state foes since the 2005-06 season. The season-opening contest is the first of four for the Mountaineers in the Global Sports Shootout, which also features the home opener versus Campbell (Nov. 12) and Appalachian’s first-ever matchups versus Cincinnati (Nov. 16) and North Carolina Central (Nov. 22), both of which will be played on the road.
The home opener versus Campbell is one of seven non-conference tilts that Appalachian hosts at the Holmes Center, highlighted by a Dec. 8 matchup versus longtime local rival Charlotte. The meeting is the 33rd all-time between the Mountaineers and 49ers and first since the Apps topped Charlotte, 87-84, in a double-overtime thriller at the Holmes Center on Nov. 19, 2008.
Other non-conference home opponents include Lees-McRae (Nov. 19), Milligan (Dec. 1), North Greenville (Dec. 4), UMKC (Dec. 21) and Bluefield (Dec. 30). The Mountaineers wrap up the road portion of their non-conference schedule with dates at Georgia (Nov. 29), Winthrop (Dec. 15), Presbyterian (Dec. 18) and Duquesne (Jan. 2).
The Mountaineers’ 16-game Southern Conference slate begins at Elon on Jan. 6. The league schedule is highlighted by a late-season three-game homestand — versus Samford (Feb. 13), Wofford (Feb. 15) and Western Carolina (Feb. 20). The home finale versus WCU marks the Mountaineers’ final SoCon home game before joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014-15.
The final SoCon matchup between traditional hoops rivals Appalachian State and Davidson on Jan. 11 headlines the road portion of the Mountaineers’ conference ledger.
Appalachian’s last Southern Conference Tournament is slated for March 7-10 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.
Fans can get their first glimpse of the 2013-14 Apps during the annual Black & Gold scrimmage at the Holmes Center on Oct. 23. All of Appalachian State’s regular-season weekday home games are slated for 7 p.m. starts while weekend home games are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip, with the exception of games yet-to-be-determined tipoff times versus Campbell (Nov. 12), Milligan (Dec. 1) and Charlotte (Dec. 8).
Appalachian State returns four of its top five scorers from a year ago including juniors Jay Canty (14.3 ppg), Tab Hamilton (9.2 ppg) and Mike Neal (8.8 ppg) along with senior Tevin Baskin (9.9 ppg). In all, the Mountaineers return 10 players who appeared in a game last year along with nearly 70 percent of the team’s scoring output and 60 percent of its rebounds.
