Gallo's 9th Inning Blast Lifts 'Dads PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads and Savannah Sand Gnats entered the 9th inning of their game Sunday afternoon deadlocked at 1-1, and with neither team mustering an extra base hit. 'Dads DH Joey Gallo was able to change all of that with one swing of the bat however, as the left-handed slugger crushed a leadoff solo blast over the right field wall to help give the Crawdads a 2-1 win at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Playing in his fourth game since returning from a month-long disabled list stint, Gallo provided some much needed pop to a series that had only seen a combined six extra base hits (all doubles) between the 'Dads and Gnats. The homer was the 29th total dinger in 2013 for Gallo, who also hit two home runs while rehabbing with the AZL Rangers.
Savannah took the lead early, with a first inning unearned run off of Hickory starter Andrew Faullkner for a 1-0 advantage. The Crawdads answered in the 4th, when catcher David Lyon came through with a 2-out, RBI single up the middle to score Gallo and tie the game at 1-1.
The tie score would last all the way until the 9th, when Gallo launched a 1-0 pitch off of Savannah reliever Hunter Carnevale to give the 'Dads their 2-1 lead. The big fly was the 27th Crawdad homer for Gallo and the 150th homer of the year for the 'Dads.
Gallo finished the game 1-3 with his home run, a walk and two runs scored. Jorge Alfaro put together his 4th straight solid game at the plate against Savannah, going 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Alfaro finished the 4-game series going a combined 8-15 with two doubles, two RBIs, three runs scored and a walk.
Hickory reliever Jose Leclerc (3-4) earned the win with two scoreless innings out of the pen. Carnevale (0-3) took the loss for the Sand Gnats with one run allowed on two hits over his two innings pitched. Faulkner earned a no-decision after allowing only one unearned run on two hits over five innings pitched.
With the win the Crawdads (28-22) split their 4-game series with the Sand Gnats (25-21). The 'Dads have an off day on Monday before returning home to start a 3-game series against the Asheville Tourists, beginning with a 7:00 pm first pitch on Tuesday.
