Sand Gnats Strand 14 In 4-1 Loss PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads played with fire virtually all night against the Savannah Sand Gnats, but in the end the 'Dads pitchers were able to avoid getting burned as the staff stranded 14 Gnats on the bases to help the Crawdads to a 4-1 win Friday at Grayson Stadium.
The Sand Gants had at least one base runner in 7 of the 9 innings and stranded multiple men on base in six different frames. Hickory starting pitcher Connor Sadzeck was the ringleader for the pitching high wire act, stranding nine runners on base over his five scoreless innings pitched. Relievers Tyler Smith and Sam Wolff chipped in with four solid innings out of the pen with six more batters stranded between them.
Offensively, the middle third of the Hickory lineup produced the most damage, with Joey Gallo, Jorge Alfaro and Nomar Mazara combining to go 7-12 with two doubles, two RBIs and all four runs scored for the 'Dads.
The Crawdads scored the first run of the game in the fourth, with Alfaro doubling to right with one away and Mazara driving him in with a single to put Hickory ahead 1-0.
The 'Dads advantage grew to 4-0 with three more runs in the 6th. Gallo, Alfaro and Mazara all singled to start the inning, with Mazara's base knock plating Gallo for the first run of the frame. First baseman Kevin Torres followed with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, and one out later Nick Urbanus walked to force in another run. Leadoff hitter Chris Garia brought in the final tally of the inning with an RBI groundout to score Mazara and put the 'Dads up by four.
Savannah finally got on the scoreboard in the 8th, when Wolff allowed an RBI single by Sand Gnats third baseman Brian Harrison to plate an inherited runner and make the score 4-1. Wolff would also allow a single and walk a man to start the 9th, but the hard-throwing righty went on to strike out the next three batters to preserve the 'Dads 4-1 win.
Alfaro ended the night 3-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Mazara went 2-4 with 2 RBI and Gallo finished 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
Sadzeck (11-4) earned his team leading 11th win of the season for his five-shutout innings on four hits, four walks and one strikeout. Savannah starter Steven Matz (4-5) took the loss after allowing one run on six hits, no walks and 9 Ks over five innings on the mound. Wolff (2) earned the save for his scoreless 1.2 IP.
With the win the Crawdads (27-21) and Sand Gnats (24-20) have split the first two games of their 4-game series. Game three is scheduled for Saturday night at 6:05 pm.
