Right-handed pitcher Sean Mason (Austin, Texas/McNeil) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join Appalachian State University’s baseball program, head coach Billy Jones announced on Wednesday. Despite playing just two seasons of varsity baseball as a prep, Mason was ranked as the 134th-best player in the baseball-rich state of Texas and one of the nation’s top 1,000 players by Perfect Game USA. He earned honorable-mention all-region recognition as a senior and was a two-time academic all-region honoree while part of the only senior class in McNeil H.S. history to lead the Mavericks (coached by Andrew Dawson) to back-to-back appearances in the Texas Class 5A playoffs. McNeil’s run to the 5A regional semifinals in 2012 was the deepest playoff run in school history.
This summer, Mason posted a 2-0 record, 0.84 ERA and four saves while pitching for the Action Baseball Club (coached by Keith Jackson).
Mason and the Mountaineers begin fall practice in September and open the 2014 campaign next February. Appalachian State is coming off a 30-24 campaign (its seventh-straight 30-win season) and its third appearance in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals in four years.
