Wiseman Named Head Coach At Avery PDF Print

It took a while, but Matt Wiseman has finally landed his first head-coaching job. And the opportunities comes at his alma mater, Avery High in Newland, N.C. Wiseman, who was an assistant coach at Watauga for a number of years, takes over the girl's basketball program this season.  He succeed Missy Lyons, who stepped down last spring. Wiseman was assistant coach on Lyons' staff the last two years. Wiseman was approved by the county's Board of Education and named head coach on Aug. 2.
Wiseman played varsity basketball for two years at Avery under head coach Kenny Ward. The 1996 team reached the sectional finals. Wiseman served as a JV assistant at Watauga for one season, and was promoted to varsity assistant coach under current WHS coach Rob Sanders. He served as an assistant coach at WHS for more than ten years.
Wiseman will make his head-coaching debut against Klay Anderson and the Pioneers at home on Friday, November 22. Wiseman and the Vikings invade Lentz-Eggers Gym on Tuesday, December 3.
