Cougars Set Another Record PDF Print

The Alexander Central High softball team set a new record last spring. The Cougars (33-1), who defeated Wake Forest-Rolesville to win the Class 4A title---their eighth state championship in school history---led the state with 399 hits. That effort broke the old record of 376 set by North Davidson in 2010. The Cougars cracked two other Top 10s in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Record Book – their 72 doubles is fifth in one season and their 27th home runs ranks sixth all-time.
Individually, Taylor Wike – the Northwestern 3A-4A Player of the Year – cracked the top 10 in three categories. She is second in single-season hits (67), two less than Brittany Henry of Murphy had in 2008 and Stephanie Jones of Black Mountain Owen had in 2011. Wike is also fifth in single-season doubles with 17 and 10th in runs scored in a season with 52.

Bailey Rhoney of the Cougars heads into next season with a chance to break the state record for consecutive games with at least one hit. She’s at 28 and the record is 32 by Kaitlyn Scheuering of Eastern Randolph.
Alexander Central already held the top spot in four individual categories. Former Cougars pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson, who pitches for Georgia, still holds the state record for career wins (112), career shutouts (83) and consecutive perfect games (3). She played at Alexander Central from 2009 through 2012.
The Cougars’ Jennifer Antal set the state record for doubles in a game, five, in 2001. Alexander Central scored 77 runs in the state playoffs this season and 20 runs in the title. The Cougars, thanks to realignment, will be members of the newly-formed North Piedmont 3A/4A Conference this fall.
