Appalachian State University women’s track and field competitors Cassie Crawford (Apex, N.C./Panther Creek) and Amanda Hamilton (Cary, N.C./Apex) have been named all-academic track and field team honorees by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their successes both on the field and in the classroom throughout the 2012-13 academic year.
Crawford and Hamilton are among 710 Division I athletes to qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships, including preliminary rounds.
The veteran pair paced the Mountaineers to grab a pair of second place finishes in both the SoCon Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Crawford, a senior nursing major, captured 15 top-five finishes over the course of the 2012-13 season, including a second place mark and all- Conference honors in the pole vault at the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championships.
Hamilton capped off her impressive Mountaineer career with 13 top-five marks, which included a new Appalachian State record in the 10,000m run with her time of 34:52.76 at the Raleigh Relays. She also earned SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week honors (April 3) and all-Conference nods in the 10,000m event at the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championships.
In addition to USTFCCCA individual honors, women’s track and field earned a Team all-Academic award for posting a GPA of 3.09 and were one of 187 NCAA Division I women’s teams to post a 3.0 GPA or better for the 2012-13 academic year.
