Running back David Burgess of Morganton-Freedom High amassed 148 yards of offense and scored twice as the West upended the East 14-7 Wednesday night in the 65th Annual North Carolina Coaches Association East-West Senior All-Star Game at A.J. Simeon Stadium in High Point, N.C.
For his efforts, Burgess, who will attend Catawba College, a Division II school in Salisbury, N.C., and a member of the South Atlantic Conference, was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Trailing 7-0, Burgess put the West on the board with a 19-yard run with 8:28 left in the third quarter. That run capped off a three-play, 22-yard drive. But the extra point attempt failed and the East led 7-6.
But Burgess saved the day as he scored the game-winning touchdown on a 79-yard pass from quarterback Garrett Young (East Lincoln) with 5:13 left in the game. Desean Jackson (Hendersonville) scored the two-point conversion moments later that gave the West its seven-point advantage.
The West overcame three turnovers and a pair of missed field goals. The game, which is usually played at Jamison Stadium at Greensboro-Grimsley High, was moved to its new location this season because of renovations being done at Jamison. Burgess, who was one of four players from the Greater Hickory area playing in the East-West game.
Burgess was joined by offensive lineman Kyree Conner of Hickory, wide receiver Matt Quigley of Alexander Central and tight end Clayton Welker of South Caldwell. Shane Laws, a graduate of Appalachian State University and the head coach at A.C. Reynolds, coached the West. Butch Carter of South Caldwell, the dean of coaches in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, was an assistant coach for the West.
