Appalachian State University infielder William Head (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) has joined the Chatham Anglers of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the final two weeks of the regular season.
Head, a rising senior at Appalachian, received the invitation to join the first-place Anglers (23-9-1) on Monday and will be in uniform when Chatham visits the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Wednesday night.
Head had a breakout campaign for the Mountaineers in 2013, hitting .288 with five doubles, two triples, a home run, 25 RBI and 34 runs scored in 49 games as Appalachian’s primary starting third baseman. He led the Southern Conference with 27 stolen bases and ranked 19th nationally with .55 steals per game.
Widely recognized as the nation’s premier amateur baseball league, the Cape League annually features some of college baseball’s top players. In 2012, 253 CCBL alums played in the Major Leagues.
Head is one of 16 Mountaineers playing in NCAA-sanctioned collegiate leagues across the nation this offseason. Appalachian State is represented on summer-ball clubs stretching from Massachusetts to Georgia to Alaska.
