The Hickory Crawdads hit their record-tying 135th home run of the season Monday night but it wasn't enough, as the visiting Charleston RiverDogs hit three long balls of their own in the 'Dads 8-4 loss at Crawdads Stadium. The Crawdads night started with a big shock, when scheduled starter and staff ace C.J. Edwards was pulled before the game after being included in the Texas Rangers trade with the Chicago Cubs.  The 'Dads instead used reliever Ryan Bores as the fill-in starter.
Bores pitched admirably on short noticed but was plagued by the long ball, as they right-hander allowed five runs on seven hits, two homers, over 4.2 IP. The first RiverDogs dinger came right away in the top of the first, when second baseman Angelo Gumbs lined a 2-out, 3-run blast to left to put his team up 3-0.
The Crawdads responded in the bottom of the frame, when Nick Vickerson slammed a 2-run shot to left to cut the score to 3-2. Vickerson's 7th homer of the year was also the 135th blast of the season for the Crawdads, tying their single-season record.
The 'Dogs would go on to pick up their second homer in the fifth in the form of a 2-run blast by Greg Bird to make the score 5-2. The Charleston advantage ballooned to 8-2 the next frame when Jake Cave smacked a 3-run dinger to left for the third RiverDogs long ball.
The 'Dads scored a single run in the 7th on an RBI double from David Lyon and a final run in the 9th on an RBI sacrifice fly by Ronald Guzman to end the scoring at 8-4.
Vickerson ended the game 2-4 with his 2-run homer while Nick Williams also picked up a multi-hit game going 2-4 with a run scored. Bores (2-2) took the loss for the 'Dads while 'Dogs starter Daniel Camarena (3-4) earned the win after giving up two runs on four hits over six innings pitched.
The loss is the 5th straight for the Crawdads, dropping them to 16-14 in the second half. The RiverDogs improve to 17-11 with the win. The 'Dads will try to salvage the final game of their 4-game series Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
