Hickory Crawdads RHP C.J. Edwards was traded by the Texas Rangers to the Chicago Cubs Monday as part of a three-player package that brought Cubs RHP Matt Garza to Texas. 2011 'Dad Justin Grimm was also a part of the deal along with INF Mike Olt and a player to be named later.
Edwards, 21, had been the Ace of the Hickory rotation this year and one of the best pitchers in the South Atlantic League. The 2011 48th round pick was 8-2 with a 1.82 ERA this season, while also ranking among the SAL leaders in ERA (1st), strikeouts (1st, 122), wins (2nd) and batting average against (3rd, .186).
The deal marks the first time the Crawdads have lost a player to a mid-season trade since 2009, when RHP Matt Nevarez was sent to the Houston Astros as part of a package for Ivan Rodriguez.
