The Hickory Crawdads recent downturn continued Sunday night, as the 'Dads fell to the visiting Charleston RiverDogs 3-0 at Crawdads Stadium. The loss is the 4th straight defeat for Hickory, tying a season high.
Despite the low score, Sunday's matchup featured a combined 16 hits between the two clubs. All 16 hits were singles however, with 12 of the base knocks coming from the RiverDogs. Charleston used all those singles to score solo runs in the third, fourth and seventh for their 3-0 advantage, but also left 12 men on base.
The Hickory offense meanwhile had a man in scoring position in four different innings, but were unable to bring anyone in. Ronald Guzman (1-4), Ryan Rua (1-3, HBP), Lewis Brinson (1-4) and Jordan Akins (1-3) picked up the four hits for the 'Dads.
Starting pitcher Andrew Faulkner (3-3) took the loss for the Crawdads after allowing two runs, one earned, on 9 hits, three walks and two strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Charleston starter Brett Gerritse (7-5) earned the win with five shutout frames on three hits and 6 Ks. 'Dogs reliever Ben Paullus (8) pitches a scoreless 8th and 9th to earn the save.
The Crawdads fall to 16-13 with the loss while the RiverDogs improve to 16-11. Hickory remains one game back of both Hagerstown and West Virginia for first place in the Northern Division. The 'Dads will look to get back in the win column on Monday in game two of their 4-game series against the 'Dogs at 7:00 pm.
