The Hickory Crawdads and Hagerstown Suns had played each other neck and neck all season long, with the two teams splitting their first 12 games going into Friday night's final matchup of the year for the two rivals. With the 3-game series and the season series in the balance it was the Suns who emerged victorious, as the 'Dads lost 8-2 in front of 3,773 fans at Crawdads Stadium. The game started off close, with a 2-run homer by Suns center fielder Narciso Mesa in the third standing as the only runs through the first four innings. Hagerstown was able to pull away in the middle innings however, plating two in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
The Suns took advantage of several walks and an untimely error to build their advantage. Crawdads starting pitcher Connor Sadzeck walked three while allowing the two fifth inning tallies, before center fielder Lewis Brinson began the sixth with an error making two of the three Hagerstown runs in the frame unearned.
Suns starting pitcher Kylin Turnbull meanwhile held the Crawdads offense in check over the first six innings. Brinson was able to break up the shutout in the seventh when he lined a solo home run to left to cut the score to 7-1. The long ball was the 17th of the year for Brinson and the 134th of the season for the 'Dads.
Following a Suns run in the top of the eighth, Hickory finished the scoring in the bottom of the frame when Ronald Guzman doubled in Nick Vickerson to make the score 8-2.
Guzman finished the night 2-3 with a double and an RBI, while Brinson went 1-4 with his solo blast. Turnbull (4-2) earned the win for his six shutout innings while Sadzeck (9-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits over 5.1 innings pitched.
With the loss the Crawdads (16-11) fall a half game behind the Suns (17-11) in the SAL Northern Division. The 'Dads will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they start a 4-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs at 7:00 pm.
