The Hickory Crawdads string of 22 consecutive scoreless innings pitched came to sudden halt Thursday night, as the 'Dads fell to the Hagerstown Suns 15-2 in front of 2,222 fans at Crawdads Stadium. A Hickory pitching staff that had allowed just six total hits over the previous two games was roughed up for a season high 21 hits en route to the Crawdads largest defeat of the year. The Suns had 10 different batters earn at least one hit, while 9 of them also scored a run.
The damage started early against 'Dads starting pitcher Luis Parra, and continued against relievers Joe Burns and Ryan Bores. The Suns took advantage of two Hickory errors and four hits to score three runs in the first for a 3-0 lead. From there Hagerstown would go on to score once in the third, three times in the fifth, two more runs in the sixth, once in the seventh and five final runs in the ninth to cap the scoring at 15-2.
The two Crawdads runs came in the form of single tallies in the fifth and sixth frames. Left fielder Nick Williams got the 'Dads on the board in the fifth with a bases loaded walk, while a Suns error allowed Ryan Rua to score in the 6th.
Williams finished the game 0-2 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch and the 'Dads lone RBI. Rua went 1-4 with a run scored while Nomar Mazara ended the night 1-2 with a walk, hit-by-pitch and a run scored.
Parra (5-3) took the loss for the Crawdads with four runs allowed on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts over four innings pitched. Hagerstown starting pitcher Nick Lee (4-2) earned the win with one run allowed on two hits, two walks and 5 Ks over five innings pitched.
The loss cuts the Crawdads (16-10) Northern Division lead over the Suns (16-11) to a half game. The two teams will meet up in the series rubber match Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm.
