Out of Gas Pilot Uses US 321 as Runway PDF Print

A pilot, heading to the Hickory Airport, ran short of his destination when he ran out of fuel—but safely landed on a stretch of US 321 near Granite Falls.  WSOC-TV interviewed pilot Eric Klein who was flying from West Virginia and was only a few miles from his destination when the fuel ran out. He first thought about landing in a parking lot he could see, then realized US 321 was just below, and used the lights of two cars as he guide as he set the plane down between them. There was no damage to the plane or anything along the highway, and no injuries.
