Ed Gainey, who played college football at Appalachian State University, scored his first professional touchdown Friday night as the Calgary Stampeders defeated the Montreal Alouettes 22-14 in a Canadian Football League game at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

Gainey, in his second year with Montreal,  blocked a punt, ran it down, and raced it in from 38-yards away to bring his team within five points at 19-14 with 3:48 left in the game. Gainey played 5 games with the team, specializing on the special teams. He recorded 3 special teams tackle during the season. He registered 41 tackles, five interceptions and 15 pass deflections during his four-year college career at ASU. Gainey showed his versatility becoming the starter at right cornerback for all 14 games in 2009 and lined up on the other side of the field the following season, making 11 starts at left cornerback. The Winston-Salem, NC native also made one start at free safety in the season finale in 2010.

Gainey only played in four games (three of those were starts) his senior year in 2011. Gainey and Lanston Tanyi, who transferred to Colorado State last season to finish his collegiate career, were suspended after they violated team rules.

NOTES: Former North Carolina quarterback Darian Durant, now in his eighth season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, tossed his 100th career TD pass Thursday night in a 39-28 win against the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Center. Durant has completed 72% of his passes, he's thrown for 674 yards, and eight TD with no interceptions through the first three games of the season.
