In Class 3A, Fred T. Foard and Hibriten each had four players selected to the Region 7 All-District team. The Tigers (23-5), who lost to Enka in the West Regional semifinals, were paced by pitcher Lexi Shubert, who was named to the all-district team and was named the District Pitcher of the Year. Shubert will attend USC-Upstate, a Division I school in Spartanburg, S.C., and a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, this fall. Shubert was also the North Carolina Gatorade Softball Player of the Year. She was 23-5 with a 0.51 earned-run-average with 328 strikeouts in 190.2 innings. In addition to her prowess in the circle, she hit .461 with 12 doubles and 31 RBIs at the plate.
Addie Bolick, Mackenzie Dziendiel and Courtney Hull of the Tigers joined Shubert on the all-district team. Kelsie Griffin, Brittany Morton, Courtney Morton and Katie Brawley of Hibriten earned all-district honors.

Nick Medinger has found a new home. Medinger, who was an assistant coach in football and baseball at Watauga High in 2012-13, has been named the new football coach at C.C. Griffin Middle School in Concord, N.C. Medinger, a phyiscal education teacher, will also help coach the boy's basketball team (he could possibly be the head coach) and the baseball team.

The Morganton 9-10 all-stars finished Wednesday night’s game with a bang, capturing the N.C. Little League District 7 baseball tournament with an 8-2 win against Watauga. Morganton’s district title is the first since a run of four straight from 2007-10. Morganton exploded for seven runs on seven hits in the final two innings.
With the game tied at 1-1, Morganton scratched across two runs on a Kalen Byrd single scoring Hayden Beach and a sliding Nate Kirk. Morganton then sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring all five runs with two outs. First baseman Blake Moore singled to left field and was replaced by courtesy runner Tucker Sisk, who moved to second on a wild pitch. Carter Wyatt followed with a single to left, but Sisk was gunned down at the plate for the second out.
GBR would like to thank Mark Cook and Bobby Dunnigan for providing us with scores and information through the tournament.
