Going for the 3-game sweep Wednesday night against the Savannah Sand Gnats the Hickory Crawdads were hurt by their own defense, as three errors led to two unearned runs in a 3-1 loss at Grayson Stadium. The Crawdads looked good early, as Nick Williams stroked the first pitch of the game into left field for a base hit and came in three batters later on an RBI double by Nomar Mazara to put the 'Dads up 1-0 in the first.
Savannah would respond in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs, one earned, to take a 2-1 advantage. Maikis De La Cruz led off the frame with a double and Jeff Reynolds reached on a walk one out later before Jeff Glenn drove in the tying run with an RBI single to right. Two batters latter, Chad Zurcher reached on a fielding error by 'Dads third baseman Joey Gallo, a miscue that also allowed Reynolds to score and gave the Sand Gnats the lead.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the fifth, when Savannah once again took advantage of a Hickory error to push their lead to 3-1. Shortstop Phillip Evans kick started the inning with a double to left and was able to come in one batter later when 'Dads catcher Nick Vickerson overthrew third base on a sacrifice bunt.
Crawdads starting pitcher Frank Lopez (2-2) took the hard luck loss, as the lefty allowed three runs, only one earned, on four hits, one walk and five Ks in five innings pitched. 'Gnats starter Marcos Camarena (3-0) earned the win while making his first start of the season. The righty went five innings on the mound and allowed one run on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Savannah reliever Beck Wheeler (7) earned the save after pitching a scoreless ninth.
Offensively, Mazara finished the game 2-4 with a double and an RBI in his first game since June 27th. Williams went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
The loss drops the Crawdads to 8-5 on the second half, but the 'Dads still leave town with a series win over the Sand Gnats (6-7) two games to one. The 'Dads will now return home to host the Kannapolis Intimidators for a 4-game series at Crawdads Stadium. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:00 pm, with a special 4th of July fireworks show scheduled for after the game.
NOTES: The Crawdads did not hit a home run tonight, so their season total still sits at 120.
