Lees-McRae College's Boys Residential Soccer Camp has been a rousing success through its first two sessions of the summer, hosting nearly 50 campers from nine different states, announced head men's soccer coach Lee Squires Wednesday.
"This is our second year of residential camps, following on from last year's success," said Squires. "We made a couple of minor modifications to improve them and make them even better. They have proven to be a great recruiting tool, as we get to evaluate players over several days rather than just one club game or showcase event. We can also assess their personalities and attitude as well as soccer ability to see if they are what we look for in a student-athlete."
Thus far, 48 campers – mostly rising juniors and seniors – have taken the pitch with Coach Squires and his camp staff, participating in a variety of drills and exercises designed to stimulate each individual player's growth while also evaluating their talent level. This year's campers represent nine different states, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and even Hawaii.
"It is important to find those players that display all the characteristics we look for in a student-athlete, such as having a soccer brain, hard work, leadership, and character," explained Squires. "Five of our incoming freshmen this year are a product of the residential camps in 2012, and we are hopeful of similar success in that regard this time around. We have already seen some good talent on display, and I look forward to seeing who makes our roster in the future."
Girls Softball Team Camp Canceled
The Girls Softball Team Camp, scheduled to be hosted by the Lees-McRae College softball program from July 8 through the 11th, has been canceled announced head coach Merritt Yackey Wednesday. The camp will be run as an individual camp and/or a recruit showcase next summer and in the future.
