Caldwell County sheriff deputies were called to what was reported as a crash mid morning yesterday, but found themselves in the midst of a murder investigation. Deputies arrived at the scene on Miller Hill Road to find a crashed Ford SUV, but then found the driver had been shot. Investigators soon had had Miller Hill Road blocked as they try to figure out how the driver was shot—at that location or before arrival.   Deputies had been working to have that driver airlifted to a regional hospital because of his injures, but rainy weather prevented a chopper from landing, and he was rushed by ambulance to Caldwell Memorial.   The official press release said that  at 9:51AM the Caldwell County Communications center received a call for assistance on Miller Hill Road in Lenoir due to a vehicle accident.  When Gamewell Fire Department First Responders arrived on the scene they found the driver in the vehicle with a gunshot wound.  First responders notified the communications center and deputies were dispatched to the accident scene.  The release says the victim was transported to Caldwell Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries, and later died at the hospital. Investigators were able to locate the scene of the shooting on Hawksbill Court in Lenoir, and began processing the scene with assistance from the North Carolina S.B.I.  The release says a person of interest is being questioned, however no arrest has been made as of the time of the release. The name of the victim will not be released at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
