Over the next couple of seasons the North Carolina Tar Heels will be introduced to a variety of new teams. The Louisville Cardinals, Pitt Panthers, and Syracuse Orange are all joining the Atlantic Coast Conference as full members. Also joining the ACC but as partial members (excluding football) are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Today the ACC, and Notre Dame announced their ACC schedule for the first three seasons as partial members of the conference beginning in 2014. Despite remaining independent in the football program, they’ve agreed to play five ACC schools each season as part of the agreement. As part of the agreement and scheduling the Irish will play each of the ACC teams at least once within the first three seasons.
“The football partnership between the ACC and Notre Dame will not only enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford in a released statement. “One of the benefits, moving forward, is that almost all of our student-athletes will have an opportunity to play against Notre Dame during their ACC careers which is extremely special.”
In 2014, the Tar Heels will travel up to South Bend to play the Fighting Irish.
In 2014, Notre Dame will play host to Louisville, North Carolina and Wake Forest. The Irish will have road games against Florida State and Syracuse.....In 2015, Clemson, Pittsburgh and Virginia will play host to the Irish, with Notre Dame hosting Boston College and Georgia Tech.....In 2016, the Irish will play host to Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech and will have road contests with NC State and Syracuse.....Playing such an historic team will definitely make the Tar Heels have to prove their worth and with the recruiting of Larry Fedora…there’s a good chance Notre Dame could get a run for their money next season!
