It was a two man show for the Hickory Crawdads Monday night, as the 'Dads received 8 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Luis Parra and 4 RBI from first baseman Ronald Guzman en route to a 5-0 shutout win over the Savannah Sand Gnats at historic Grayson Stadium.
Facing the team with the best team ERA in the South Atlantic League it was Parra who shined brightest, as the southpaw appeared in complete control through the entirety of his eight-inning outing. The lean Dominican Republic native did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fifth, and only gave up three singles through his entire performance.
When his night was over, Parra became the first Crawdad this year to throw 8 shutout innings, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out four.
At the plate, the story of the night was the Crawdads 18-year-old first baseman. Guzman had arguably his finest game as a 'Dad, going 3-5 with a home run and four RBI.
The scoring started in the fourth, when DH Nick Williams tripled to left with one out and was followed by left fielder Nick Vickerson who drew a walk. That brought up Guzman who proceeded to line an RBI single to right to plate Williams and put the Crawdads up 1-0. The 'Dads would add another run in the frame when Vickerson scored on an error to make the score 2-0.
The score would remain the same until the seventh, when Vickerson reached base and moved to second on an error by Savannah first baseman Nelfi Zapata. That once again brought up Guzman, who came through with an RBI single to left to push Hickory's lead to 3-0.
Finally in the ninth Guzman capped off his night with a 2-run homer to right, scoring Vickerson again and giving the 'Dads their 5-0 lead. The long ball was the third of the year for Guzman and the 117th of the season for the Crawdads.
Joining Guzman with a good game at the plate was Vickerson, who finished the night 1-2 with a double, three walks and three runs scored. Williams went 1-5 with a triple and a run scored.
Parra (4-1) earned the win for Hickory for his stand out performance, while Savannah starting pitcher Jake Kuebler (2-4) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in his 5 IP. Crawdads reliever Jose Leclerc finished out the game with a perfect ninth.
Hickory improves to 7-4 with the win while Savannah drops to 5-6 with the loss. The two teams will meet up again Tuesday night at 7:05 pm for game two of the 3-game series.
